Set far back from the road, surrounded by towering trees lays our river house. The house is set in a picturesque setting with apple trees, and lots of sunshine. It is nestled in the hills of the wine country overlooking rolling terrain, country view, hills, valleys, big skies, and the Russian River. The Russian River is the perfect place to swim, fish, or take a stroll on the quiet beach with my family. Every summer we rent a house to make new memories, and relive old ones. As I step through the ferns, and vibrant wildflowers, I am able to hear the bubbling music of the river nearby. I begin to speed up my pace and suddenly emerge from the brush standing on blistering sand. “Ouch, ouch” I say, as I tip toe like a mouse into the shimmering water. As I emerge from under the blissful water of the river, the suns rays begin sizzling my skin, and then I remember that as beautiful as nature is it can be dangerous. On the shore there’s jumping thrilled children playing in the sand. Every summer we invite my goddaughters/cousins to come, and enjoy the sand, and pebbles of the rivers shoreline with us. Summers for me are like stories from a fairytale there is always a happy ending. The sand swirling through the dry air, my hair unwillingly tangles in the breeze. The sun directly above is a buttery color as its looks down at us having the time of our lives. My Dad barbeques on the deck and the sweet delicious scent makes my mouth water. Laughter fills the air as we add colorful condiments to our searing hot dogs. When finished with our food and reapplying sunscreen, we disturb the calm, and pleasant shoreline as we run through its rough, and sandy beach to play, and swim in the water. We fool around with full freedom splashing each other until someone wins the water war. Though the sun is so hot, like a burning torch, we do not feel it in the bitter water. But, all our fun dies down, as the skies grow dark, the warm breeze settles down, and the roaring waters quiet down. We gather up our towel, cups and toys and march up the hill to the house. The cold air conditioning is a shock to our bodies as we get together inside to brush off the sand from our toes. As night arrives I look back on the day, and am reminded that the fresh smell of cut grass and the sticky sun will be back tomorrow.
