WHAT could have been worse than 9/11? How about follow-up attacks in Chicago and Los Angeles only weeks later?
That was the plan, according to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, alleged al Qaeda operations chief now in custody. According to the Sunday Times of London, Khalid told U.S. interrogators that the Library Tower in Los Angeles and the Sears Tower in Chicago were the terror group’s “next targets” following the 9/11 atrocity that claimed 3,000 Americans. “We were looking for symbols of economic might,” said Khalid. “The original plan was for a two-pronged attack with five targets on the East Coast of America and five on the West Coast.”
What stopped them? “Decisive U.S. response to the New York and Washington attacks, which disrupted the terrorist organization’s plans so thoroughly that it could not proceed,” said Khalid. “Before 9/11, we could dispatch operatives with the expectation of follow-up contact, but after Oct. 7 [the beginning of U
U.S. bombing in Afghanistan] that changed 180 degrees.”
Will this revelation change some American minds 180 degrees? President Bush’s departure from prior administrations’ “business as usual” response to global terror likely saved thousands of lives in two of our largest cities. Those critical of our “war-mongering” president should take note – and be very, very grateful
